Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is offering an online professional program for people with an interest in learning more about small UAS.

“It could be somebody wanting to get into the industry, somebody already in the industry who wanted to take it a degree further to find out about new regulations,” said Gary Burke, director, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Education office of professional education. “It would really be anybody who wanted to find out about unmanned systems,” Burke said.

The university is offering courses that include information on the review of history and design of UAS, how industries use them and small UAS applications such as filming and law enforcement. Students taking the on-line course also will learn about how to safely and legally operate small UAS for recreational and professional purposes.

Brent Terwilliger, an Embry-Riddle assistant professor of aeronautics, will teach the courses, which last about four weeks and are available online through the university’s Canvas learning management system, Burke said. All three courses will be re-offered after their initial run, he said.

The cost of each course is $399 and the certificate cost is $1,197, Courses and the initial dates they will be offered are.

-          History and application of sUAS Aug. 1-29, 2016

-          sUAS Design and Configuration: Sept. 5-Oct. 3, 2016.

-          sUAS Operations and Regulations: Oct. 10-Nov. 7, 2016.

When the courses are completed, workshops will be available at various locations, Burke said. Since 2014 Embry-Riddle has offered workshops across the United States and around the world. The two-day workshops are designed for professionals and specialists who want to expand their understanding of the applications, operations and support of UAS. Discussions focus on topics including the considerations, regulations and challenges in the UAS industry.
